Welcome to the official listening party! Every month we’ll be discussing an album from our favorite band. Hellohellohelloo I am new here a while back someone on the official Switchfoot forum (which died & is now inaccessible:'( ) was like 'weird observation: Relient K have a much more active reddit than Switchfoot's' & I was like 'huh I need to check this out' so here I am hello again. I'm probably the biggest fan of Relient K in Scotland although there are a few of us over here. So, The Bird And the Bee Sides! First of all, appreciation for the album title, it's punderful.I really enjoy just the randomness of this collection.
I absolutely adore concept albums (long live House of Heroes! Btw listen to Colors asap) but I like that these songs are, for the most part, fun, happy tunes that are in no way connected, they just exist.
And it's what I love about Relient K & why they are my favourite band of all time; they don't have to be deep and meaningul 24/7 to be intelligent. It's also fun seeing RK exploring ska and country, that definitely makes me smile. The songs on this record which have always stood out to me are 'At Least We Made It This Far', 'Curl Up and Die' and 'The Lining Is Silver'. But my favourite from this record, and is in fact one of my favourite songs ever, is 'You'll Always Be My Best Friend'. The cheerfulness of this song, & just it's youthful innocence reminds me so much of my best friend, & how we knew as soon as we met each other that we would be friends for a long, long time. And one of those reasons is our mutual love of Relient K. It will probably get played at my wedding.I could go on but I think that'll do me for my first reddit post.:).
So underrated. For a long time I ignored this album thinking it was no competition for their others, but I soon stumbled upon the deep lyrics hidden behind their witty titles. There are a lot of small filler songs that get regularly skipped. This gets a lot of hate from people who say it's a money grab, but in reality the great songs way outweigh the fillers.I love how unique this album is. It doesn't sound like a copy/paste of anything they've done before or after.
The humour is on point, it's actually the last time we've seen this funny side of RK since. Scene and Herd, There Was No Thief, and Curl Up And Die, are my personal favs.I can't compare Beesides with anything else, it's just so different. This is one of my favorite releases from Relient K. I love the experimentation and influences of genres from folk and country, to reggae and ska. One of my favorite parts of this EP are the songs written and lead by the other members, like 'The Last, the Lost, the Least' (John Warne), 'No Reaction' (Ethan Luck) and 'You'll Always Be My Best Friend' (Matt Hoopes), all of which are my personal highlights.
Although some might find this kinda awkward, I really like some of the spontaneous and out-there transitions from song to song. I don't know why, but I just like that disconnected and all over the place feel it gives. This release isn't as thematic or emotional as Forget and Not Slow Down or Mmhmm, but it still has that fun and relatable charm that's present in those releases and other ones as well.
My favorite tracks are 'The Lining is Silver', 'The Scene and Herd', 'At Least We Made It This Far', 'No Reaction' and 'The Last, the Lost, the Least'. I really, really, REALLY enjoy this album. I've been listening to it a lot the last year, usually on my way to and from work. The #14 and #26 have lyrics that speak to me about a certain situation going on in the last year, and I've found myself playing those often.Track #15, I find fantastic, specifically the line about the prison, and repetition.Track #24 is a favorite as well, because it's just original and flows so well with the name of the song.Track #6 is a situation I've had happen, and I know others have had happen as well, so I think it's powerful to hear it in a song. 'I'm going to find the thief!' 'Oh, nevermind, it was in my hidden secret magic spot that I forgot.'
